HC Deb 14 June 1984 vol 61 cc559-60W
Mr. Freeman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any proposals for increasing the staff of the Stamp Office to deal with the greater volume of adjudication and litigation.

Mr. Moore

No. There is, however, a temporary increase in work following the use of schemes designed to avoid stamp duty on the sale of real property and the position is being kept under review.

Mr. Freeman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what changes in practice have been necessary in the administration of stamp duty as a result of the judgment in the case of Furniss v. Dawson.

Mr. Moore

The application of the Furnissv. Dawson case to stamp duty is being carefully considered in the same way as its application to other taxes.

Mr. Thurnham

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the latest available annual figures for stamp duty from property in each of the standard regions in England and Wales.

Mr. Hayhoe

The estimated breakdown for 1983–84 is:

Yorkshire and Humberside 20
East Midlands 20
East Anglia 15
South East (excluding London) 190
Greater London 125
