HC Deb 14 June 1984 vol 61 cc542-3W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report the number of persons in (a) employment, (b) self-employment and (c) Her Majesty's forces in June 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979 and 1983; what was the total of (a), (b) and (c) in each of those years; and if he will express each figure as a percentage of the United Kingdom's working population in each category.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following is the information:

Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of (a) men and (b) women at present registered as unemployed in the London borough of Wandsworth; and what was the number unemployed in June 1979.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives the figures for unemployed claimants in May 1984 and the figures for registered unemployed in June 1979 in the area covered by the Balham, Clapham junction and Tooting jobcentres, which corresponds closely to the London borough of Wandsworth. It also gives the figures on both bases for October 1982.

The comparisons are affected by the change in the basis of the unemployment count in October 1982 and by the 1983 Budget provisions which meant that some men aged 60 and over no longer had to sign on in order to receive supplementary benefit or national insurance credits.

Male Female
Registered unemployed
June 1979 3,874 1,379
October 1982 10,809 4,409
Unemployed claimants
October 1982 10,449 3,821
May 1984 11,429 4,515

Mr. Tom Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many (a) men and (b) women were placed in employment in the London borough of Wandsworth during the last month for which statistics are available.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Jobcentres in the London borough of Wandsworth placed 623 people in the five-week period ending 4 May 1984, the latest for which statistics are available. Separate figures for men and women are not compiled monthly.

There is likely to have been a substantial number of people who found jobs in the area other than through the jobcentres. Nationally, it is estimated that about a quarter of all engagements are made through jobcentres.
