We have powers under the Medicines Act to restrict the sale and supply of new medicines. We have no power to compel manufacturers to undertake post marketing studies, but in cases where the Committee on Safety of Medicines has advised that such studies would be helpful we expect manufacturers to agree to undertake them. Our arrangements for licensing drugs are stricter than those concerned with food additives and a manufacturer has to demonstrate a drug's safety before we will award a product license.
