HC Deb 12 June 1984 vol 61 cc414-20W
Mr. Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children from Bolton have received places under the assisted places scheme in each of the years since the scheme was introduced.

Mr. Dunn

Information is not available on the home residence of assisted pupils. One school in Bolton participates in the scheme — Bolton school—and the numbers of assisted pupils in its boys' and girls' divisions have been as follows:

1981 1982 1983
Boys Girls Boys Girls Boys Girls
Age 11 34 32 38 37 34 39
Sixth form 5 5 5 5 5
Total 34 37 43 42 39 44

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will give a breakdown by age of pupil of the numbers of children benefiting from the assisted places scheme in each of the years since its introduction;

(2) how many of the children benefiting under the assisted places scheme in each of the years since its introduction were in (a) boarding places and (b) day attendance.

Mr. Dunn

The information for England is as follows:

Number of assisted pupils in each school year

of which:
(a) Boarding pupils 274 586 805
(b) Day pupils 3,911 8,030 12,297

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) if he will give a breakdown by region of the numbers of pupils whose parents are resident in that region who have received funds under the assisted places scheme;

(2) if he will give a breakdown by region of the total funds paid out under the assisted places scheme in each of the years since the introduction of the scheme.

Mr. Dunn

Information on places of residence is not available, but a regional breakdown based on the location of participating schools is as follows:

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has any plans to increase the maximum salary threshold above which funds are not available under the assisted places scheme.

Mr. Dunn

The scale for assessing the parental contribution is revalued annually in the light of inflation. This does not, however, specify a maximum salary threshold. The point at which parents in England and Wales cease to qualify for assistance depends not only on income, but also on the number of other children in the family as well as the relevant school's fees.

Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give a breakdown by school of the number of pupils who received financial assistance under the assisted places scheme in each of the years since its introduction.

Mr. Dunn
