HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 cc360-1W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has as to the state of the technology of communications equipment of Warsaw pact countries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stanley

The technology of Warsaw pact communications equipment is believed to be somewhat behind that used by NATO countries but is steadily improving.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what information he has as to (a) the reliability and (b) the level of protection against electromagnetic pulse weapons of communications equipment used by Warsaw pact countries; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stanley

Current Warsaw pact communications systems are believed to be less reliable but to have inherently greater electromagnetic pulse protection than devices based on more modern technology.
