HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 cc372-3W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what discussions he has had with oil companies on the Sedco BP 471 finance issue; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

The question of the United Kingdom's continued participation in the international ocean drilling programme, in which the vessel SEDCO-BP 471 is to be employed, is a matter for the Natural Environment Research Council in the first instance. I understand that the council attaches importance to the project which has considerable scientific promise. I further understand that the council is actively pursuing possible sources of finance to enable UK membership of the project to continue and is having discussions with the oil industry, amongst others, to that end.
