HC Deb 11 June 1984 vol 61 c373W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, in view of the continuing prevalence of industrial lung diseases in Wales, he will ask the Medical Research Council to maintain the work and effectiveness of the pneumoconiosis unit at Llandough, Penarth.

Mr. Brooke

It is for the Medical Research Council to decide on priorities for Medical research within the cash sums allocated to it annually from the science budget. I understand that an expert sub-committee of the council recently reviewed the work of the pneumoconiosis unit and has recommended that the unit should be discontinued and that the council is expected to make a decision on that recommendation shortly, following discussions with the unit's staff.
