HC Deb 08 June 1984 vol 61 c307W
Mr. Corrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of people registered with jobcentres in Scotland as unemployed.

Mr. Younger

The information is not available in the form requested.

With the introduction of voluntary registration in October 1982, unemployed people are no longer required to register at jobcentres. On 5 April 1984, the latest date for which information is available, there were 337,246 unemployed claimants in Scotland.

Mr. Corrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of job vacancies held by jobcentres in Scotland.

Mr. Younger

The number of vacancies notified to jobcentres in Scotland and remaining unfilled on 4 May 1984, the latest date for which information is available, was 16,258.

Vacancies notified to jobcentres are estimated to be about one third of all available vacancies. The number remaining unfilled at a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified or filled.
