HC Deb 05 June 1984 vol 61 c137W
Mr. Maclean

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will make a statement on the eradication of fowl pest in Cumbria.

Mrs. Fenner

An outbreak of Newcastle disease was confirmed in a poultry flock of some 10,000 layers at Penrith, Cumbria on 30 April. The flock was slaughtered, the carcases destroyed and the premises cleansed and disinfected. Movement restrictions were imposed in an area of approximately 10 km radius around the affected premises. In addition, tracing was undertaken and restrictions were imposed on holdings in the vicinity. A link was established with raw material for feedingstuffs contaminated by diseased feral pigeons at Liverpool docks.

There have been no further outbreaks in Cumbria and no suspect cases are under investigation. The movement restrictions imposed around Penrith were lifted at midnight 31 May.
