Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the funding originally allocated to the youth training scheme; and by how much it has been reduced.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 601–2]: The original provision for grants to sponsors and development of the youth training scheme in 1983–84 was £465.1 million. The provisional estimate of actual expenditure is £388.5 million.

Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the original number of planned places in the youth training scheme; and by how many they have been reduced.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 601–2]: It was estimated by the youth task group in April 1982 that sufficient youth training scheme places would be required in 1983–84 to cater for up to 460,000 entrants. About 442,000 places were actually approved in 1983–84, which was more than sufficient to cater for all eligible youngsters who wished to enter the scheme.

Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the original estimate of young employees who would participate in the youth training scheme; and what is the actual number.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 601–2]: It was originally estimated that about 100,000 16-year-olds would participate in the youth training scheme as employees in 1983–84. The number of employees who have actually entered the scheme is not currently available.

Ms. Clare Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will estimate the proportion of youth training scheme places in each sector of employment.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 601 –2]: A survey in October 1983 of all managing agents and sponsors taking part in the youth training scheme analysed places by industry, as follows:

Percentage
Agriculture 1
Energy 1
Ore extraction 1
Engineering 8
Other manufacturing 7
Construction 4
Distribution 13
Transport 2
Finance 6
Other services 56
Undefined 1
TOTAL 100

A copy of the survey has been placed in the Library.

More up-to-date information will be available later in the year.
