HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 c80W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his latest estimate of the number of people directly employed in the salmon fishing industry in the east of Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

It is estimated that in 1982 about 500 people were employed at Scottish netting stations between the Tweed and the Ugie. When account is taken of angling, the employment generated by salmon fishing is likely to be much greater but there is no information on which any reliable estimates could be based about the extent of this source of employment.
