HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 c23W
Mr. Ernie Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what measures the Government are taking to reduce the industrial pollution of water resources in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Waldegrave

Discharges of trade effluent to inland waters and underground strata are at present controlled under the Rivers (Prevention of Pollution) Acts 1951–1961 and the Water Resources Act 1963. The Government are now bringing into force provisions of part II of the Control of Pollution Act 1974 which strengthen these powers and permit their application to discharges to all inland, coastal and estuarial waters, specified underground water and, in certain circumstances, to land.
