Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the number of people employed in local government in Scotland, both in actual numbers and in full-time equivalents; and if he will express both figures as a percentage of the total population.

The number of people employed in local government in Scotland in December 1983 was 294,203 in total and 252,145 in full-time equivalents. These figures expressed as percentages of the mid-1983 estimate of population are 5.7 per cent and 4.9 per cent. respectively.
