asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many dock workers were employed at the following ports: Liverpool, Hull, Southampton, Bristol and Glasgow in May 1979; and what were the respective figures at the latest available date.

The average numbers of registered dock workers employed in these ports in the second quarter of 1979 and fourth quarter of 1983 were as follows:

The estimated number employed in the port industry in England and Wales in May 1979 was 63,500 and in March 1983 was 44,500.
