HC Deb 04 June 1984 vol 61 cc58-9W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many persons are now employed (a) full-time and (b) part time at the translation unit of his Department; and how this compares with the position in 1979.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 564]: At 1 May 1984 there were five persons employed full-time in the Welsh Office translation unit. This represents no change from the staffing level in May 1979.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales on what basis fees are charged when the translation unit of his Department offers its services to private or commercial bodies; and what was the total recouped from such fees during 1983–84.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 564]: In recent years no fees have been charged. Although this represents a small proportion of the work of the translation unit, the Department is currently considering its policy regarding the charging of fees to outside bodies for whom we provide a translation service.

Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales approximately how many letters were translated (a) from Welsh into English and (b) from English into Welsh by the translation unit of his Department in 1983.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

[pursuant to his reply, 25 May 1984, c. 564]: In 1983 the Welsh Office translation unit translated approximately 975 letters from Welsh into English and 820 from English into Welsh.
