Mr. NicholasBrown asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he is taking to ensure the implementation of the Health and Safety Executive code of practice on work with asbestos in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry.
§ Mr. GummerAsbestos is not now used in the shipbuilding industry.
In the ship repair industry compliance with the aproved code of practice "Work with Asbestos Insulation and Asbestos Coating", published in revised form in June 1983, or an equally effective standard for health and safety is required. Inspectors visit and take appropriate enforcement measures when necessary.
Controls will be strengthened by the Asbestos (Licensing) Regulations which come into force on 1 August 1984.
