HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c143W
15. Mr. Thurnham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment for what skills are work permits issued to foreign nationals to allow them entry to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Alan Clark

In 1983 the highest number of long-term work permits issued were for general and financial managers, other administrators in industry and commerce, nurses, scientists, engineers and technologists. Together these occupations represent about three-quarters of all the various occupational groupings for which long-term permits issues were made.

Mr. Nicholas Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received about delays in dealing with applications for work permits to the overseas labour section of his Department; and what action is he taking to reduce delays.

Mr. Alan Clark

I have received few representations about delays in dealing with work permit applications. However, I am anxious that the work of my Department should be conducted as expeditiously as possible, and officials are regularly reminded of this.
