HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c254W
Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether there is any need to maintain the advice he gave the public on 15 May not to remove objects from beaches near Sellafield in Cumbria.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The results of monitoring of the beaches between Eskmeals and St. Bees head in Cumbria obtained over a further two months have satisfied my Department that there is no longer any need to maintain the previous advice to the public restricting the full and open use of the beaches by warning them not to remove or retain objects washed up by the sea on to the beaches. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the Department of Health and Social Security and the National Radiological Protection Board have been consulted and agree that the advice may be withdrawn.

Monitoring by the authorities concerned will continue and any contaminated material will be removed. All monitoring results will be published in due course.
