HL Deb 31 July 1984 vol 455 cc774-5WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are satisfied that prisoners segregated under Prison Rule 43 are still seen daily by a Medical Officer as stated by Lord Belstead on 7th December 1981 (Col. 1253).

Lord Elton

The formal requirement for medical officers' visits to prisoners segregated under Prison Rule 43 is as I stated it in my reply to the noble Lord's earlier Question on 20th July (H.L. Debates, Vol. 454, Col. 1808). In practice, many medical officers do visit these prisoners daily during the course of visits to other classes of prisoner for whom daily visits are required. I have no doubt that it was this practice that my noble friend Lord Belstead had in mind in the reply to which the noble Lord refers.
