HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c193W
Mr. Oakes

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the next increase in the cost of the annual subscription to the Official Report is due; and what will be the new price for (a) the House of Commons edition and (b) the House of Lords edition.

Mr. Lawson

[pursuant to his reply, 30 July 1984]: It is too early to say.

Number of employees Percentage change
1954 1984
Electricity supply industry (England and Wales) 174,350 137,300 -21
National Coal Board 791,500 231,050 -71
British Gas Corporation 145,000 97,200 -33
United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (1) (UKAEA) 17,850 13,800 -23

Notes:

(1) British Nuclear Fuels plc and Amersham International plc, both formerly part of the UKAEA, were established as separate companies in 1971, all the shares in Amersham International plc having been sold by public flotation in 1982. Number of employees in BNF plc, in respect of which I am sole shareholder, in 1971 and 1984 are respectively 9,000; 15,250 (+69 per cent.). The weapons group at Aldermaston, also formerly part of the UKAEA, was transferred to the Ministry of Defence in 1973.

(2) For the British National Oil Corporation, comparisons of the kind requested are not possible because of the change in the nature of the corporation's functions following the privatisation in 1982 of its former oil exploration and production business. The number of staff currently employed is 122.
