HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c200W
57. Mr. Tom Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is the relative position of British manufacturing in the world economy compared with 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Trippier

With economic recovery now well underway, the recent performance of our manufacturing industry compares favourably with that of other main manufacturing countries. In particular, output per man hour in United Kingdom manufacturing increased by 14 per cent. between 1979 and 1983, more than was recorded by any of our main competitors. The rate of growth of unit wage costs in United Kingdom manufacturing is now broadly in line with that of our main competitors whereas in 1979 they were growing much more rapidly. United Kingdom industry is also making strenuous efforts to improve the vital non-price aspects of competitiveness such as quality and delivery dates. The future prospects for the growth of output, investment and productivity in United Kingdom manufacturing are good, but the need for moderation in wage settlements remains.
