HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c229W
56. Mr. John Hunt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if, in view of the recent deaths attributable to jogging, he will take steps to publicise the potential health hazards which may arise from this activity.

Mr. John Patten

Both the Sports Council and the Health Education Council, which encourage participation in physical exercise, already make clear that a sensible approach is necessary. People who have not taken any exercise for a number of years should start gradually when they take up any sport. Anyone who is in doubt about his overall fitness should consult his general practitioner before taking part in strenuous exercise, including jogging.
