HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 cc173-4W
Mr. Hawksley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what response the Government have made to the insistence of the Indian Government that British subjects need a visa to visit India; and if he has any proposals for reciprocal arrangements.

Mr. Whitney

The Indian Government have recently introduced a visa requirement for citizens of all Commonwealth countries including the United Kingdom. We have been in regular contact with the Indian authorities about the practical consequences for travellers, and have expressed our hope that this will be a temporary measure. The question of whether to introduce a reciprocal requirement for citizens of India travelling to the United Kingdom is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department.
