asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what levels of staff reductions his Department has achieved since the beginning of the current parliamentary Session.

For the Northern Ireland Office, the Home Civil Service staff in post numbered 190½ on 1 July 1983 and 179½ on 1 July 1984; the numbers of Northern Ireland civil servants in post (including prison service staff) were 4,140½ on 1 July 1983 and 4,185½ on 1 July 1984.

At 1 July 1983 the staff in post in Northern Ireland departments numbered 25,713; at 1 July 1984 the total was 25,025.
