HC Deb 31 July 1984 vol 65 c221W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in what circumstances an order under the proviso to article 12(5) of the Cremation Regulations 1930 is made; how many such orders have been made in the past five years; of these, how many have been made since 28 July 1982; and whether the coroner is consulted when such an order is made.

Mr. Mellor

This is a matter for individual medical referees and one of which the Home Office does not require to be informed.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the applications for orders under article 12(A)2 of the Cremation Regulations 1930 during the last five years have been granted.

Mr. Mellor

Data prior to January 1981 could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. For the period from 7 January 1981 there were 2,537 applications, for which 2,485 orders were issued.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements exist to ensure that information held by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office which would be relevant to a decision by him as to whether to issue an order under article 12(A) 2 of the Cremation Regulations 1930 is communicated to his Department.

Mr. Mellor

In view of the fact that, in relation to the cremation order issued in respect of Mr. Robin Walsh, neither the Home Secretary, nor officials acting on his behalf were aware of information relevant to the decision, officials in the Home Office are considering what arrangements are now necessary to ensure that such information is communicated.
