Mr. Barron

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people in the Rotherham area had their benefits reduced for refusing to go on the youth training scheme in 1983.

Dr. Boyson

The number of people in the Rotherham area who were disqualified from receiving unemployment benefit and consequently had their supplementary benefit reduced for refusing to go on the youth training scheme in 1983 was five.

Mr. Barron

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many people refused to go on the youth training scheme in the Rotherham area during 1983;

(2) how many people in the Rotherham area were reported to the unemployment benefit office for refusing to go on the youth training scheme in 1983.

Mr. Alan Clark

I have been asked to reply.

The total number of refusals is not available. The number of people reported during 1983 to Rotherham and nearby unemployment benefit offices for refusing a youth training scheme place was 41.
