§ Lord Monsonasked Her Majesty's Government:
Why biscuits containing non-dairy animal fats and vegetable fats as well as butter are permitted to be described and advertised as "butter shortbread".
636WA
§ Lord BelsteadThere are no legal compositional standards for butter shortbread. It is possible for fats other than butter to be used in such a product but the product would need to be sufficiently characterised by butter to avoid misleading the purchaser and thus offending Section 6 of the Food and Drugs Act 1955 and the Food Labelling Regulations 1980.
