HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 c639W
Sir Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what new initiatives he proposes to combat the substantial increase in the use of hard drugs in Her Majesty's prisons.

Mr. Hurd

Methods of detecting drugs within establishments are kept continuously under review. Specialist dogs are being trained in the detection of heroin. An analysis of the records of drugs detected in prison establishments gives no indication that the use of hard drugs is on the increase. Of the detections in 1983 the overwhelming majority were of cannabis.
