HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 c651W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average period of detention after sentence for (a) life sentence prisoners convicted of murder and (b) all life sentence prisoners, released in 1960 to 1962, 1970 to 1972 and 1980 to 1982.

Mr. Mellor

[pursuant to his reply, 18 July 1984, c. 193]: For the average time served under sentence in prison department establishments in England and Wales by those sentenced for murder who were first released on licence in 1980 to 1982, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Leicester, East (Mr. Bruinvels) on 11 July 1983 at column 218. For all those first released on licence from life sentences in 1980 to 1982 the corresponding average time was also about 10½ years. Provision of corresponding average times served for those first released in 1970 to 1972 would involve disproportionate cost and informatin for those first released in 1960 to 1962 is not available.
