HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 c713W
Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the population of the United Kingdom has lived in the same place for (a) up to two years (b) two to five years, (c) six to 10 years and (d) over 10 years on the latest figures; and how these compare with similar statistics over the past 25 years.

Mr. John Patten

The following figures are derived from the general household survey which covers private households in Great Britain.

Percentage of persons aged
Length of residence at present address 15 and over 16 and over
1971 1982
Under 2 years 15 14
2–5 years 25 23
6–10 years 19 18
11 years or more 41 45

For earlier years, the only comparable figures are provided by the 1963 labour mobility survey of Great Britain. In that year for persons aged 15 and over 13 per cent. had been at their present address for less than two years, and 19 per cent. for two to four years.
