asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much was spent in the last three years by regional health authorities on the treatment of National Health Service patients in independent, psychiatric hospitals, by region and hospital; and how many patients in each region were so treated.

[pursuant to his reply, 25 June 1984, c. 357] Information about the number of such patients treated in specific periods is not collected centrally and related expenditure is not separately identifiable in the annual accounts of health authorities submitted to the Department. The number of discharges and deaths of NHS psychiatric patients receiving treatment under contractual arrangements with institutions outside the NHS during the three years 1980 to 1982 were:
