HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 cc743-4W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the level of long-term youth unemployment in the Province at the latest date; and what were the figures for July 1979.

Mr. Butler

At 14 June 1984 there were 503 young persons aged under 18 in Northern Ireland who had been continuously unemployed for more than one year. A comparable claimant-based figure is not available for July 1979, but 449 unemployed persons aged under 18 had been registered at jobmarkets for more than one year at that date.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the latest unemployment figures for (a) the Belfast travel-to-work area and (b) the Province; and what were the comparable figures for July 1979.

Mr. Butler

At 14 June 1984 the numbers of unemployed claimants in the Belfast travel-to-work area and the Province were 52,641 and 118,897 respectively. At July 1979 there were an estimated 68,300 unemployed claimants in the Province. An estimate of claimant unemployment is not available for the Belfast travel-to-work area, but at July 1979 there were 32,318 unemployed persons registered at jobmarkets in the area.
