HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 cc728-9W
Mr. Park

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, using local authority condensation returns, he will produce a table showing the average cost of treating condensation in each of the three grades of severity according to the type of construction of the dwellings in each local authority district in England.

Sir George Young

Local authorities in England do not make such returns to the Department. The following table

Thousand Households
Owner Occupied Private Rented Local Authority Housing Association
Steamed windows 3,228 513 2,026 93
Paint deterioration (cills) 826 231 928 54
Mould/damage to decorations 812 425 1,043 60
Damage to floors, carpets or furniture 108 94 236 14

Notes:

(i) Many households experienced two or more problems.

(ii) In addition there were the equivalent of 570,000 households vacant and 235,000 for which replies were not obtainable.

(iii) Sample size was 4,553.

Analyses by type of construction and for individual local authority areas are not possible. The cost of remedial treatment will vary according to individual circumstances.
