§ Mr. Peter Bruinvelsasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to speed up the sale of council flats; how many have been sold by local authorities since the right-to-buy legislation was enacted and if he will make a statement.
§ Sir George Young[pursuant to his reply, 19 July 1984, c. 311–12]: Between October 1980 and March 1984, 18,975 flats were sold by English local authorities, 10,650 of them under the right to buy. I am placing a table showing sales by individual authorities in the Library. The Housing and Building Control Act 1984 includes a number of measures to extend the opportunity for public sector tenants to buy their homes. I refer my hon. Friend to the reply given to my hon. Friend the Minister for Housing and Construction to my hon. Friend, the Member for Enfield, North (Mr. Eggar) on 11 July.
