HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc445-7W
Mr. Knox

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list in the Official Report the proportion of gross domestic product devoted to each main spending programme for each financial year since 1977–78.

Mr. Peter Rees

The following table gives this information using the estimates of public expenditure by programme contained in table 1.3 of Cmnd. 9143 and the latest estimate of GDP. This information is not readily available on a consistent basis prior to 1978–79. The following table also includes the latest figures for public expenditure as a percentage of GDP as defined in chart 1.8 of Cmnd. 9143.

Mr. Peter Rees

The proportion of the gross domestic product represented by savings, industrial investment and public sector investment in the United Kingdom in each year since 1970 is given in the table:

1975 15.4 6.4 8.4
1976 15.8 6.4 8.0
1977 19.0 6.2 6.6

1979 19.6 6.0 5.5
1980 18.6 5.5 5.4
1981 17.1 4.9 4.6
1982 17.6 4.5 4.3

Details of the proportion of the gross domestic product represented by savings in the other members of the European Community are published on page 155 of the July 1984 issue of OECD Economic Outlook. Figures of industrial investment by EC countries may be derived from information published by OECD in "OECD National Accounts Volume II Detailed Tables 1964–1981" (table 4a in the individual country sections). There are no figures available for public sector investment as such in other EC countries, but figures of general Government (central Government plus state and local government) investment are given in table 9 (line 28) for each country in the OECD national accounts publication referred to. Copies of these publications are available in the Library.

Mr. Wilson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in the Official Report, from international sources available to him, a table showing the top 20 countries in order of gross national product per head of population for the years 1978,1979,1980,1981, 1982 and 1983; and if he will express the relative positions in percentage terms using the United States gross national product as a base.

Mr. Peter Rees

I shall let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.
