HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 c399W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people have been remanded in custody so far in 1984; and how many of these were because of a refusal to accept bail conditions.

Mr. Hurd

It is provisionally estimated that about 30,000 untried or convicted unsentenced prisoners were first received into custody in prison department establishments in England and Wales in the first six months of 1984. The reason for the committal is not recorded centrally.
