HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc488-9W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what are the reasons for the rises in fees for the Ministry of Transport test since 1979; and if he will list the fees at the date of each increase over the past 10 years.

Mrs. Chalker

The fee for the MOT test is linked to the wage rates of garage mechanics who undertake the test. Until 1982 the fee was increased in line with minimum wage rates as agreed by the national joint council for the motor trade. From 1983 increases were related to the average wage of mechanics as published in the Department of Employment's New Earnings Survey.

The following fees have applied over the past 10 years (increases generally come into effect in mid year):

Cars £ Solo motor cycles £
1975 2.10 1.25
1977 4.10 2.50
1978 4.50 2.70
1979 5.60 3.36
1980 6.70 4.00
1981 7.10 4.26
1982 7.50 4.50
1983 9.00 5.40
1984 10.00 60.0
