HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc524-5W
Mr. Allen McKay

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if the archaeological work at present undertaken by Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils will be funded in the same way and at the same level as at present if the councils are abolished.

Mr. Macfarlane

We have already announced plans for the historic buildings division of the GLC— which presently supports archaeology in London — to be transferred to the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission with sufficient resources to continue this important work. Outside London it would be for metropolitan district councils to continue the archaeological work presently done by metropolitan counties with the opportunity for the same level of support from the HBMC for individual projects as now.
