HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc479-80W
Mr. Terry Fields

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what financial aid has been given in each of the last five years to the Government of El Salvador; and what other forms of assistance Her Majesty's Government have extended in each of the last five years.

Mr. Raison

During the last five years a total of £758,000 has been provided to the Government of El Salvador under Britain's bilateral technical co-operation programme as follows:

£
1979 448,000
1980 265,000
1981 41,000
1982 3,000
1983 1,000

In addition, since 1981 a total of £1 million has been provided to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for their relief programmes among Salvadorean refugees and displaced persons and for their wider Central American programmes from which Salvadoreans also benefit. In 1982, £10,000 was provided for flood relief and £2,500 was given to the YMCA for training Salvadorean refugees in Costa Rica. In 1984, £100,000 was donated to CAFOD for their work among Salvadorean displaced persons and orphans. Through contributions to the EC Britain has in recent years provided £150,000 to UNHCR and ICRC and has also shared the cost of giving emergency food aid. No other assistance has been provided in the last five years.
