Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the total cost to his Department of assistance given to employees to encourage them to continue their education in each of the last three years for which figures are available.

Mr. Pattie

[pursuant to his reply, 3 July 1984, c.63]: I regret that the answer given omitted the words "and industrial". The correct answer is as follows: The amounts expended on fees and books to enable non-industrial and industrial civilian employees of the Ministry of Defence to continue their education during each of the last three financial years are approximately as follows:

£
1981–82 300,000
1982–83 425,000
1983–84 540,000
