Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will ensure that the Monopolies and Mergers Commission makes a thorough investigation of the proposed takeover of Booker McConnell by the Dee Corporation, in view of its implications on competition in the food industry.

Mr. Fletcher

The Monopolies and Mergers Commission is an independent body, and it is for it to decide how to conduct its own investigation.
