asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the most recent estimate made by the Inland Revenue of the scale of the black economy in 1983 and 1984.

The nature of the black economy, in the United Kingdom as elsewhere, is such that it is not possible to make any firm estimate of its scale or of the overall amount of tax lost through it.
