HC Deb 23 July 1984 vol 64 cc504-5W
Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he is satisfied with the achievements over the last five years of the arms control and disarmament unit; what plans he has for the expansion of that unit's budget, personnel and activities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Luce

Yes, we are satisfied with the work of the arms control and disarmament department. There are no plans at present to expand its budget, personnel or activities.

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the annual budget during the financial years ended 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983 of the arms control and disarmament unit; and how many full-time personnel were employed during each financial year.

Mr. Whitney

The number and cost of the full-time staff of the arms control and disarmament department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the financial years specified was:

Cost £ Staff
1978–79 232,318 18
1979–80 283,122 16
1980–81 298,608 16
1981–82 336,018 16
1982–83 276,590 13

These figures cover basic staff costs, common services and accommodation. They do not include expenditure on travel and publications which for the years before 1983–84 could be identified only at disproportionate cost.
