§ Mr. Knoxasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps are being taken to monitor compliance by South African subsidiaries of British companies with the European Community code of conduct on employment conditions; and how the record of British companies compares with those of other European Community companies.
§ Mr. ChannonReports from companies are examined carefully and where appropriate discussed with companies in both the United Kingdom and South Africa. An analysis of companies' reports is submitted to the House each year, the most recent on 10 April, 1984 at column 146. The record of British companies in submitted reports and complying with the code's requirements compares favourably with those of other European Community companies (see European Parliament report PE 85.247 of 3 June 1983 for the most recent assessment, a copy of which is in the Library of the House).
