HC Deb 18 July 1984 vol 64 cc211-2W
47. Mr. Lambie

asked the Solicitor-General for Scotland if he is now prepared to reconsider his policy of non-harassment of travelling people; and if he will make a statement.

The Solicitor-General for Scotland

The application of the policy to exceptionally large groups of traveling people involved in non-traditional patterns of movement is being reviewed. Otherwise the policy of non-harassment of travelling people in relation to prosecution continues. Each case is considered by my noble and learned Friend the Lord Advocate personally and a decision on whether to prosecute is taken on the basis of all the circumstances including the availability of alternative sites.

It is emphasised that the policy relates only to circumstances of unlawful encampment and not to other criminal offences.
