HC Deb 18 July 1984 vol 64 cc222-3W
Mr. Bowen Wells

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what further assistance the United Kingdom intends to, provide to the Southern Africa Development Co-ordination Conference.

Mr. Raison

Further aid totalling £406,000 is to be made available to SADCC this year in support of a project to improve a road link between northern Malawi and Tanzania. Its purpose it to open up a temporary route for traffic from Malawi through Tanzania to the port of Dar-es-Salaam.

This allocation will be additional to the £12 million which Britain has already pledged for SADCC since 1981, and will be used to meet the cost of work on the project in Tanzania. The regular aid programme for Malawi will bear the cost of work on the Malawian side of the border, which is expected to total £470,000.
