HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 c108W
44. Mr. Radice

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make it his policy to accept the arbitrator's award in the teachers' dispute.

45. Mr. Flannery

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will now make it his policy to accept the result of the arbitration on teachers' pay; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Keith Joseph

The Remuneration of Teachers Act 1965 provides that the holder of my office shall give effect to the recommendations of arbitrators, unless each House of Parliament resolves that national economic circumstances require that such effect should not be given. It would be wrong to say in advance of receiving the arbitrator's recommendation whether or not this procedure will be invoked.
