Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the current estimated cost of a non-fatal accident on a motorway (a) at night and (b) during the day.

Mrs. Chalker

Estimated costs of non-fatal injury accidents on motorways in 1982 are:

(a) Night time: £9,930 per serious accident
£1,900 per slight accident
£4,420 per non-fatal injury accident;
(b) Day time: £10,240 per serious accident
£1,900 per slight accident
£4,100 per non-fatal injury accident.

Provisional estimates for 1983 are:

(a) Night time: £11,590 per serious accident
£2,020 per slight accident
£4,870 per non-fatal injury accident;
(b) Day time: £10,980 per serious accident
£2,020 per slight accident
£4,250 per non-fatal injury accident.

These estimates comprise resource costs and an allowance for pain, grief and suffering.

Cost estimates for non-injury accidents (which involve only damage to property and a small element of police and administration cost) do not distinguish between night and day time. The estimated cost per damage only accident on motorways is £670 for 1982 and £710 for 1983.
