HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 c87W
Mr. Pike

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of people remanded in custody awaiting trial were (a) found not guilty and (b) had no prosecution evidence offered when appearing on trial for the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Hurd

The information available is published annually in "Prison Statistics, England and Wales" — tables 2.1 and 2.2 of the issue for 1982 (Cmnd. 9027); cases in which the defendant is found not guilty or is not proceeded against are not separately distinguished in central records. The hon. Member may also find it useful to refer to the reply given to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Edinburgh, West on 27 April and to Section V of Appendix 1 on pages 166–67 of Volume 2 of the First Report from the Home Affairs Committee 1983–84 on Remands in Custody (HC 252-II).
