HC Deb 17 July 1984 vol 64 c132W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people have been killed, and how many injured, during mountaineering expeditions in England during the last 10 years.

Mr. Macfarlane

Accurate figures are readily available only for the last six years. They cover England, Scotland and Wales and encompass rock-climbing and hill-walking as well as mountaineering. During that period there have been 1,625 injuries and 320 deaths. These figures include fatalities resulting from causes — for example, heart attacks—not directly associated with the activity.
