§ Mr. Terlezkiasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people have been killed, and how many injured, during mountaineering expeditions in England during the last 10 years.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneAccurate figures are readily available only for the last six years. They cover England, Scotland and Wales and encompass rock-climbing and hill-walking as well as mountaineering. During that period there have been 1,625 injuries and 320 deaths. These figures include fatalities resulting from causes — for example, heart attacks—not directly associated with the activity.
